This photographic series is inspired by Fleetwood Mac’s Landslide, a song that explores feelings of isolation, loneliness, and feeling lost in life. Setting, lighting, and colouring (or lack of), were important to portray these feelings.
The beach is a symbol of restlessness and conflict, which was represented as my subject's inner emotions. The transition from my subject on dry land to being immersed in the water reflects her struggle to make a decision and intensifies the atmosphere of the photos. I chose to shoot at night, to create an air of mystery, and to develop a sombre feeling, which is also aided by the black and white photographs. Furthermore, the night shoot makes the photos feel cold and uncomfortable, so there is a sense of unease within this series.
The lighting is focused on my subject and is relatively simple but effective, which aids this narrative. The deep contrast between the darkness of the background and the brightly lit subject, causes us to feel a sense of apprehension that occurs when you can’t see everything.
