2021 Lens: Turangawaewae

For this project, I chose to do the site of Cuba Street which, unlike Christchurch, is a very busy and vibrant city. It makes me feel welcomed into my new home. For this project, I captured the welcoming essence of Cuba Street; the casual magic, and corners of creativity hidden everywhere. I captured the intimate moments I had with strangers and how they make up what Cuba Street is today. My cinematic photography acted as a way to “slow down time”, to allow us to reflect on our busy lives, and appreciate the small details of life. Colouring and time of day acted as a vital part of this series; I shot mostly at night and tried to find the most colourful parts of the street. In this way, I could get a big contrast between my lights and darks, as well as capture the rich tones of the magenta and the blues. The colouring made my images feel nostalgic and almost unlike real life, achieving a dreamy, alternate-reality effect.
